Posted on: Monday, 18 October 2004, 06:00 CDT

LONDON and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. , today announced that a diverse set of customers across Sun's EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region have purchased the Sun Java(TM) Enterprise System during the last six months to help reduce the costs and complexity associated with acquiring and operating software. These customers -- which range from small and mid-sized businesses to enterprises -- include Inmarsat, Turkcell, Borsa Italiana, E-Plus, EUROCONTROL, Pixelpark AG, and Young Generation. Today's announcement builds on the tremendous demand across the globe for the Java Enterprise System, an open, integrated, standards-based software system that delivers a core set of industry-leading shared enterprise network services.

"In less than one year, there are hundreds of thousands of Java Enterprise System users worldwide, demonstrating the market demand for a simplified software licensing model," said John Loiacono, executive vice president, Software at Sun. "Sun is a systems company and innovations like the Java Enterprise System are part of our long-term strategy to help customers accelerate the delivery of new services, and unleash mobility with security to achieve sustained business advantages."

"Organizations have an increasing demand for software infrastructure technology. They can't do without it, and it has to be dependable, but the real business advantage is in the higher-level applications that depend on it," said Rob Hailstone, Director European Systems Infrastructure Software Research at IDC. "An approach to packaging and licensing that delivers a wide set of infrastructure capabilities, cost-effectively, in a manner that is very simple to implement and with minimal bureaucracy as to where and how it can be used will be very appealing to large organisations."
