Silicon & Software Systems Announces 5 Level Hierarchical Traffic Management for the Intel IXP28XX Network Processor Product Line

Posted on: Tuesday, 19 October 2004, 12:00 CDT

Silicon & Software Systems (S3), a leading supplier of network processor solutions, today announced an OC-48 5 level hierarchical shaper and scheduler (HSS) solution, S3-HSS-5L, that is optimized for the Intel(R) IXP28XX network processor product line. S3-HSS-5L enables equipment vendors to address DSL forum (TR-059, TR-092) Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for next generation broadband network elements including edge routers, B-RAS and aggregation equipment.

S3's 5 level shaper and scheduler, S3-HSS-5L, delivered as an optimized software product on the IXP28XX product line, can be flexibly deployed on standards based modular platforms reducing BOM, power and board real-estate. It leaves sufficient headroom to implement other dataplane functionality such as ATM termination and IP forwarding. S3-HSS-5L also provides built-in congestion avoidance and fine grained HSS traffic management of both packet and cell based flows. OSS support is made available via an API allowing configuration of the cone and retrieval of statistics. S3-HSS-5L also offers the advantage of scalability to suit higher data rates and evolving network architectures.

"S3's hierarchical shaper and scheduler solution is a great fit for infrastructure equipment manufacturers looking to adhere to TR-059 Traffic Management and B-RAS functionality", said Bob Ghaffari, metro-edge segment manager, Intel Infrastructure Processor Division. "This solution brings a critical building block to enable complete service provider switch and router solutions on the Intel(R) IXP28XX network processor product line."

"S3's HSS solution illustrates our continued commitment to building Intel(R) IXP2XXX based solutions in the network access and edge space", said Jim O'Donoghue, General Manager of S3's Network Processing Business Unit. "Both Intel and S3 architects contributed to S3-HSS-5L's highly optimal architecture, underlining our joint commitment to bring silicon and supporting software solutions to the communications infrastructure marketplace."
