Oct. 19--TOKYO -- Nokia Japan Co. said Tuesday it will ship its third-generation mobile phone, Nokia 6630, to Vodafone K.K. in Japan by the end of this year.
The 6630 is the world's lightest mobile phone that can be used for both the 3G and Global System for Mobile Communications formats, according to the Japanese unit of the Finland-based mobile phone maker.
The Nokia 3G mobile phone has a 1.3-megapixel camera and can download music from compact discs, it said.
The timing and price for sales to consumers have yet to be fixed, the firm said.
In Japan, mobile phones have been shifting to the third-generation models featuring faster data transmission. European and U.S. mobile phone makers, including Nokia, have lagged behind their Japanese rivals in offering 3G models in Japan, industry observers say.
