List Shows a 70% Increase in Lit Fiber-Optic Communities since May
The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) announced today an updated list of "U.S. Optical Fiber Communities," with the total rising to 217 communities in 37 states. Prepared by Render, Vanderslice & Associates and TeleChoice, the list tracks communities nationwide that are delivering broadband services to customers through FTTH solutions.
Eighty-nine communities representing a cross-section of America were added to the list - an increase of 70 percent since the last update in May - including Mission Trails in Loma Linda, Calif.; Cinderberry Estates in Seaford, Del.; The Settlements in Victor, Idaho; Columbus, Kan.; Johnson County, Ky.; Shelbysport, Md.; Tryon, N.C.; Lima, Ohio; Douglas County, Ore.; Ridge Point in Rockhill, S.C.; and Keller, Texas.
Five states made their first appearance on the U.S. Optical Fiber Communities list since its inception in 2002: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia.
"The significant increase in lit communities since the list was updated less than six months ago demonstrates the real traction FTTH continues to gain in the United States," said Mike DiMauro, FTTH Council president. "Communities are recognizing that the life-enhancing applications and opportunities enabled by fiber to the home make it a critical infrastructure need for its citizens."
The list shows that FTTH deployments continue to be driven by municipalities, competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) and new residential developments.
"Communities across the country are realizing the power of broadband communications networks," said Matthew J. Flanigan, TIA president. "Not content to wait for upgrades from the local telephone or cable companies, they are laying their own fiber and building their own communications infrastructure. These 'smart' communities enable their residents and businesses to become much more productive and innovative, thereby improving the quality of their citizens' lives."
