Venture Design Services, Inc. (VDSI) and Helicomm, Inc., leading partners in the provision of voice and data wireless networks for the mining industry, today announced the successful trial of their standards-based underground location and tracking system, MineTracerTM, at the Southern West Virginia Resources mine. The Mobile Location Transponder (MLT) meets the requirements of Title Code 30 of Federal Regulations, Part 23 for use in gassy underground mines.

MineTracerTM consists of wireless mesh Access Points, low-power Mobile Tags and application management software to enable real-time services over a wireless mesh network. This solution enables mine operators to identify where a miner is located, track his movements, send a signal about mine conditions and respond to emergency needs. MLT is designed for real-time location applications that require reliability, network capacity and ease of installation.

“This was an important test, in real-life conditions, to show the value and reliability of our product,” said Helicomm director of sales, Ken Hill. “Our product provides the added margin of safety and tracking that will save lives and improve working conditions,” added Eric Pirttima, business development manager, VDSI.

Helicomm will show MineTracerTM at Longwall USA 2007 in Pittsburgh, 5 June to 7 June, in Booth #334.
