Wowza Media Systems Builds on Flash(R) Developer Enthusiasm to Hit 1000-License Milestone in Less Than 90 Days

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Wowza Media Systems, an emerging streaming server software leader, announced today that its Wowza Media Server Pro has gained over 1,000 licensees since its release on February 19, 2007. Building on developer enthusiasm for a high-performance, low-cost alternative to Adobe(R) Flash Media Server, the company has already built an impressive list of customers, including ASL Internet, Astream, Carnegie Speech, FAN Interactive Media BV (FAN.tv), Infomaniac Network S.A., Julius Blum GmbH, Macy's, MondayJobs.com, and Rowan University.
This momentum demonstrates Wowza's alignment with the demands of an exploding market. According to the just-published CDN 2006 -- 2007: Market Size, Share, Metrics and Analytics report by AccuStream iMedia Research, demand for streaming media servers is rising rapidly. CDNs have increased their deployment of streaming media servers by 74% in 2006 alone. Flash has also gained market share, closing in on Windows Media.
"Flash delivery has quickly captured format share," commented Paul A. Palumbo, director of research at AccuStream. "In 2006 Flash content made up 40.6% of cumulative gigabytes served in the audio and video content category, leaving Windows Media with a 44.6% share."
"Our rapid growth is a resounding confirmation that we have zeroed in on the needs of an underserved market," said David Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder of Wowza Media Systems. "The close-knit Flash developer community is a prime gateway to customer adoption, and in the Wowza Media Server Pro they're finding the high-performance, affordable alternative to Adobe FMS they were looking for. Their enthusiastic adoption of the free Wowza Pro10 edition, which currently accounts for the majority of our licenses, has established the foundation of a solid sales pipeline as they recommend our paid editions to their clients for production use."
The Wowza Pro10 edition is a fully-functional version of Wowza Media Server Pro that is limited to ten concurrent streams. In combination with the company's free integrated development environment (Wowza IDE), developers can easily create applications for their customers, and even develop new functionality based on the highly-extensible Wowza Java architecture. Upgrading to higher streaming capacity from the free version is a simple software license key change.
"As a developer I need to have confidence in products that I recommend to my clients," said Jack Gelin, a principal in Technology Business Solutions, a New York-based streaming media and infrastructure consulting company. "Working with the Pro10 edition quickly convinced me that I could confidently recommend Wowza to a very important client -- Macy's Home Store -- and based on their satisfaction, I will surely recommend Wowza to other clients." He adds, "Wowza has a great product, and their tech support and pricing are outstanding."
"Video streaming is a productivity tool that we rely on in our day-to-day operations," commented Sunil Verma, vice president, information technology for Macy's Home Store. "We are delighted with the stability and performance that we're getting from Wowza Media Server Pro. It is also substantially more economical than the alternative. Wowza was absolutely the right choice for our video streaming needs."
Adoption of the Wowza Media Server Pro is worldwide, with 60% of current licensees outside the U.S. and Canada. The most popular paid version is the Wowza Media Server Pro Unlimited, which enables customers to deliver as many streams as their hardware can handle (a single server can have up to eight cores running a single OS), for only $5,000. The result is a total cost of ownership up to 80% less than Adobe FMS.
