Digital Hollywood Conference Booth # 47 -- Solid State Networks, a company dedicated to developing high-performance distributed content delivery solutions, today announced the release of the ION(TM) Media Accelerator, a web browser plug-in that significantly increases downloading and streaming speeds of rich media content. ION Media Accelerator is the latest innovation within Solid State's Distributed Delivery Network(TM) (DDN(TM)) and is available for use with both Firefox(R) and Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer(R). ION Media Accelerator is based on the same technology previously introduced by Solid State as the first peer-assisted delivery solution which combines HTTP and the BitTorrent Protocol(TM).
"We are excited to introduce this key component of our vision for the hybrid CDN. A one time install of the ION Media Accelerator makes peer-assisted transfers for consumers as simple as ordinary HTTP downloads and on-demand streaming. For the first time ever, content publishers have a clientless, peer-assisted delivery solution available," said Rick Buonincontri, founder and CEO of Solid State Networks.
The Solid State ION Media Accelerator allows content publishers to easily deploy a peer-assisted content delivery solution across large content libraries . ION supports a wide variety of formats, including on-demand streaming video using Adobe Flash(R) and Microsoft Windows Media(R) and Quicksilver(TM) formats. ION is a simply installed browser plug-in that provides an unobtrusive and transparent user experience, and eliminates the need for consumers to run an external client.
The Solid State DDN is a multi-protocol, multi-source content delivery solution that is deployed as an overlay to a content publisher's existing hosting infrastructure or CDN. Every user is guaranteed delivery and QoS by relying on HTTP delivery, while performance is improved and per-unit delivery costs are lowered by methods using an optimized P2P protocol.
Solid State Networks also announced today that PlayWhat.com, a leading free destination for videogame demos, trailers and related downloads, has deployed Solid State technology to simplify and speed the delivery of games, video and other content from their popular site. PlayWhat.com has completed a site-wide implementation utilizing the ION Media Accelerator in an effort to provide the fastest game content delivery and best user experience available from any site of its kind. PlayWhat.com is a website that specializes in providing a consolidated library of game demos and media for quick and easy download access.
"We've configured every download -- demos, trailers and other media -- to be delivered by a PlayWhat-branded download dialogue specifically designed for us by State Networks," said Todd Volz, Executive Editor for PlayWhat.com. "As a result of Solid State's hybrid implementation of the BitTorrent Protocol, our file transfer speeds have skyrocketed, allowing us to deliver high-quality content to our customers at blazing speeds."
