The U.S. Department of Labor today reopened its New Orleans Job Corps Center following new construction and renovations completed after Hurricane Katrina damaged the facility at 3801 Hollygrove St.

“The reopening of the New Orleans Center signals a fresh start for young people severely affected by Hurricane Katrina, and will allow Job Corps to once again offer the educational and career technical instruction that provides students with the ability to succeed in the 21st century workplace,” said Esther Johnson, Job Corps national director.

One-third of original center staff members, bolstered by additional staff hires, are expected to be on board by June 30 to provide outreach, admissions and career transition services.

Students will enroll at the center on a phased basis. Under the first phase, 15 students are expected to be on board by July 17. After that, 12 students will enroll each week until the total number reaches 100.

The second phase will begin in November, when it is anticipated that between 24 and 36 students will enroll each month. The total number of students is expected to reach 224 by the end of February.

Also during the second phase, staffing will be at 60.

During the first phase, the center will offer training in carpentry and health occupations, such as certified nursing assistant, phlebotomy, EKG technician and medical office support.

As the center moves toward full strength, the career technical areas will be supplemented with security and painting training.
