Gridpoint Systems Demonstrates Industry's First Traffic Engineering Application for Connection Oriented Carrier Ethernet

Posted on: Tuesday, 19 June 2007, 09:00 CDT

Gridpoint Systems today announced plans to demonstrate the industry's first traffic engineering application for Connection Oriented Carrier Ethernet at NXTcomm07. The Ethernet Path Computation Module (E-PCM) being showcased, fills a void in current Carrier Ethernet solutions by enabling the scaling of multi-vendor, multi-technology and multi-domain networks.

The E-PCM's innovative algorithms enable service providers to compute QoS (quality of service) compliant, resource optimized paths in large scale networks in seconds. Unlike single constraint legacy routing algorithms, the Ethernet Path Computation Module ensures compliancy with the MEF's (Metro Ethernet Forum's) multi-attribute service definitions. This allows service providers to guarantee delivery of the required bandwidth profile along with QoS parameters: delay, jitter, availability and loss. In addition, the application supports the input of customized business policies providing carriers further control to meet their unique requirements.

The Ethernet Path Computation Module can enhance routing solutions in existing connectionless networks in support of early related standards activity. It can also be used in connection oriented architectures to meet the needs of next generation networks (NGN) based on converged optical and Ethernet transport with multiple access technologies. The E-PCM's patent-pending, multi-stage algorithm uses self learning to rapidly calculate traffic engineered paths across complex network topologies.

"Previous path computation approaches cannot scale to address the complexity of large, multi-domain, multi-region or multi-layer networks," said Jim Arseneault, Gridpoint Systems president and chief executive officer. "Today we've delivered a powerful, real-world traffic engineering solution to help scale existing connectionless networks and support emerging connection oriented approaches driven by PBB-TE."

Built on a service oriented architecture (SOA), the E-PCM can be integrated into various entities including network nodes, element and network management systems (EMS and NMS) and operational support systems (OSS) based on the application requirement. Using a modular design and open API (applications programming interface), the E-PCM allows technology partners to rapidly embed the application in a variety of architectures, speeding time to market.

"Gridpoint is the first vendor we've seen to deliver a traffic engineering solution to help make Ethernet more viable for carrier grade network deployment," said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research. "Traffic engineering products delivered with pragmatic applications for connection oriented Ethernet will help equipment vendors sell more products and deliver on promises of a simplifying network management and guaranteeing service quality."

Visitors are welcome to view a live demonstration of Gridpoint Systems' product portfolio including the Ethernet Path Computation Module at booth 5376 at NXTcomm07, which is being held in Chicago, Illinois from June 18-21st, 2007. This showcase includes path computation encompassing multi-vendor wireless and wireline IP/MPLS and Ethernet equipment. In addition, Jim Arseneault will be discussing the challenges and opportunities for Ethernet provisioning and wireless backhaul in two sessions at the MEF theatre.
