Maine Chamber of Commerce Commends Governor Baldacci and Legislature for Stepping Away From ''Net Neutrality'' Legislation
Posted on: Thursday, 21 June 2007, 12:00 CDT
The Maine Chamber of Commerce today recognized Governor John Baldacci, Senator Barry Hobbins and the members of the Maine Legislature for rejecting harmful "net neutrality" legislation ensuring Maine does not issue mixed messages to companies who are contemplating investments to expand Maine's broadband access across the state.
Rather than legislation that would have made Maine the first state to enact onerous regulations on the Internet, Senator Barry Hobbins instead sponsored a study that requests the Maine Public Advocate examine the Federal Communications Commission's broadband analysis. Doing so will ensure the Internet continues to operate in a free and open manner as it does today, and our state can continue the critical effort to attract and promote investment in broadband.
The Governor and the Legislature have acted in the best interest of all Maine's citizens to avoid Internet regulation that would have harmed the state's economy, slowed broadband deployment, and slowed jobs and investment in Maine.
Moreover, Sen. Hobbins' study resolve carefully excludes the phrase "net neutrality," sending a clear signal to broadband companies -- as well as other businesses that would be harmed by slowed broadband development -- that Maine is not contemplating such cumbersome regulations.
The Maine Chamber of Commerce applauds the Governor, Sen. Hobbins and the Legislature for taking an active step away from the dangerous course of Internet regulation through net neutrality. By making it clear that our state will promote greater access to a better Internet, we are putting Maine jobs and broadband deployment first.
