Overwhelming Demand for Data Center Space Moves DataPoint to Expand Its Tide Point Campus Facility

Posted on: Friday, 22 June 2007, 12:13 CDT

DataPoint, Inc., a Baltimore-based connectivity and managed service provider as well as a carrier-class data center serving business customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, has finalized plans to increase the square footage of its Tide Point N+1 data center facility to include more than 2,000 square feet of new rack space. The build out and infrastructure improvements will begin immediately, and are expected to be completed by mid-September at a total cost of more than $1 million.

This major expansion effort follows a banner year for the company, which has sold data center space to more than 150 new customers over the past 12 months--nearly filling its existing data center to capacity. All told, DataPoint now boasts more than 2,000 business customers within a 40-mile radius of Baltimore. The various services for these customers are monitored on site inside DataPoint's Network Operations Center, which is staffed with engineers 24x7x365. DataPoint is the area's leading independent Internet service provider. No other provider within metropolitan Baltimore offers the DataPoint combination of data center services and Internet connectivity.

Based on its recent growth trends, DataPoint projects that more than half of the new rack space will be occupied by the end of the current year. The addition of the new space will increase the size of the overall data center facility to more than 13,000 square feet, with plans for a second expansion already in the works.

Carter Smith, General Manager at DataPoint, says the company's growth is no longer limited to Baltimore and that improvements like this are allowing it to stay competitive with big-business alternatives. "Now we're seeing new customers come from as far away as Washington D.C., California, New York, Massachusetts and Europe. This facility expansion, along with increasing the size of our regional network footprint, is evidence that our customers have confidence in our strength and ability to provide reliable service."

Director of Sales Curtis DePass added, "Everything we do is pursued with an eye towards serving our clients and their evolving needs. We believe this latest investment reflects our commitment to continually exceed our customers' expectations."

This is the fourth in a string of major improvements made by DataPoint throughout the last year to further its reach within the Baltimore business community. These include its December 2006 acquisition of Velocity Server, followed by its January 2007 acquisition of CharmNet. As part of Landmark Communications and its wholly owned subsidiary, Continental Broadband, DataPoint has ready access to the capital and the product development necessary to continue its growth in Baltimore.

DataPoint provides the area's largest all-Ethernet network offering bandwidth selections beginning at 3Mbps up to 40Mbps of service, with tiered options in between. The data center boasts redundant fiber connectivity directly to multiple Tier-1 carriers, including Level 3, Qwest, and XO Communications, and offers a fully redundant Cisco Powered network with 24x7x365 on-site monitoring and redundant power and cooling sources.
