Lycos Integrates Blinkx Video Search on Mix Platform

WALTHAM, Mass., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Lycos, Inc. (http://www.lycos.com/), a leading community destination for video entertainment content, today announced it has expanded its relationship with blinkx, the world's largest video search engine, fully integrating blinkx functionality on its Lycos MIX platform.
Now when users visit Lycos MIX (http://mix.lycos.com/) to create video playlists, they can easily search for and view video results powered by blinkx within MIX, without ever having to leave the site. With blinkx video search, MIX creators simply type their video selection into the search box, and blinkx then pulls video clips from a variety of different sources across the web, presenting video search results all in one place on MIX.
"We're thrilled with the response to Lycos MIX, so we've made it even easier to create a video MIX," said Eric Austrew, product manager with Lycos Labs. "We've eliminated the need to copy and paste video URLs, and most important, users don't need to leave the site every time they want to add a video. Additionally, blinkx provides our users with some of the highest quality video tools available on the web, to quickly find, view, organize and share all types of online video content."
"We are very excited to extend our partnership with Lycos, one of the top 12 web properties worldwide, to power video search on the very innovative Lycos MIX platform," said Suranga Chandratillake, founder of blinkx. "Through blinkx's technology that includes speech-to-text transcription and visual analysis, we're able to deliver multiple relevant video search results efficiently, allowing Lycos users to immediately embed video clips into the MIXes they create."
Lycos MIX, developed internally by the Lycos Labs product team, made its debut earlier this year as a tool for users to create an amalgamation of video content to share with other users. MIX visitors also participate in the MIX by viewing, commenting and adding more video clips to the MIX. Since its launch in February, thousands of video playlists, ranging from rap videos to Japanese cartoons, have been created on Lycos MIX. Earlier this month, Lycos also launched the MIX widget, allowing Tripod (http://www.tripod.com/) and Angelfire (http://www.angelfire.com/) members to easily embed their MIXes onto Tripod and Angelfire blogs and sites. Similar to other popular video sites, the ratio of active MIX creators vs. passive MIX viewers is heavily skewed towards the viewers, with 99% of visitors coming to the site to watch MIX videos, and 1% of users actively making MIXes.
Lycos first introduced its proprietary "Watch & Chat" technology in Nov. 2006, with the launch of Lycos Cinema (http://cinema.lycos.com/), the internet's premiere video-based socialization product allowing multiple users to watch simultaneously and chat about video content in real-time. Since then, Lycos MIX (http://mix.lycos.com/) took Watch & Chat to another level, allowing groups of people to pull video clips from different sources across the web to create playlists of content, to watch and share and chat with others in the MIX.
Lycos first teamed with blinkx in August 2006 to power video search across the Lycos Network, giving Lycos's millions of users search results from blinkx's index of more than 12 million hours of searchable video content, including favorite TV moments, news clips, short documentaries, viral videos, music videos, video blogs and more.
