Hitler Film Crops Up in New York

A reel of film showing Adolf Hitler enjoying a music festival with his Nazi friends before World War II has turned up in New York.
The rare home movie had been found in the rubble of a German opera house at the end of the war by U.S. serviceman Walter Ladziak, who sent it home to New York where it languished forgotten for decades, the New York Daily News reported Monday.
The movie, which shows Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Goering and Heinrich Himmler enjoying a Richard Wagner music festival, was rediscovered 10 years ago after the death of Laziak's brother-in-law, who had received it because he had a projector. But it wasn't viewed until Laziak's nephew, Francis Cardamone, 58, of Port Richmond, sent it to PBS' History Detectives for authentication.
Ladziak, now 85 and still living on Staten Island, said he found the film in 1945 in the bombed ruins of the Old Opera House in Bayreuth.
Gwen Wright, a Columbia University professor and the TV show's host, confirmed the footage shows the Fuhrer and his friends arriving at the festival, but said its authenticity couldn't be confirmed until the show airs in September.
