YouGetIt.Com Vs. Local.Com: The $30B Local Online Advertising Race
Posted on: Monday, 2 July 2007, 18:17 CDT
The local online advertising market in America is estimated to be over $30 billion annually by 2012, and it seems that just about everyone is trying to invent a successful strategy to take advantage of local search and directories to create new ways to advertise. YouGetIt.com, a local social media portal developed in partnership with Web2 Corp (OTCBB: WBTO), is built around a very different basic premise than other engines such as Google, Yahoo!, or even smaller sites such as Local.com. Web2 Corp's CEO, William Mobley, has his reasons why he thinks the recent Local.com patent announcement is another example of Internet technology companies using flawed strategies to enter the local marketplace. "Directory assistance, 411 calls, all of this technology still focuses on the wrong person in the local market: the advertiser. You can't put advertising first in a local network or social media portal. You need to build a solid base around the user, determine what he or she wants. Cater to those needs. Local.com -- not to pick on anyone, but they've been getting a lot of press in the last few days; however, we believe Local.com is a limited scope sort of application. They handle a small portion of your online life. And once a visitor has looked up the information that they want, they go away.
"YouGetIt is a local search application combined with a robust social media portal that goes beyond anyone else. We've been in an early beta stage for the last 60 days, keeping quiet while we digest user/tester feedback and make changes. We're getting ready to roll out to the consumer now, and we'll be loading up over 12 million local business records in a few weeks. Web2 Corp has a history of building successful social media portals -- our localized India search engine, modeled on the same ideas behind YouGetIt, has shot past all Indian search sites like Guruji.com, SearchIndia.com, India123.com -- and we're applying everything that we've learned to build a more comprehensive local social network in the United States with YouGetIt.com."
ByIndia.com, acquired by Web2 Corp and re-launched in October of 2006, has seen a several thousand-fold increase in traffic and users since then. According to Alexa.com, ByIndia already does more than double the amount of traffic that Local.com is doing today.
"When launching YouGetIt.com to consumers next month, we expect it will blow right by Local.com -- and all YouGetIt's other competitors -- in daily visitor counts, just as we did with our Indian counterparts to ByIndia.com. Our experience on successful sites like ByIndia.com has proven that we've got the chops to move into a marketplace and disrupt competition," Mobley continued. "We do this by building better applications than our competitors and then marketing them aggressively. YouGetIt is a whole separate level of functionality from Local.com, or anyone else out there.
"You can see the beta at www.YouGetIt.com for yourself, if you're interested. If you go there, you'll see that our business directory -- a full-featured business and search listing that has always had a built-in system of cell phone and e-mail alerts -- is one of over a dozen areas that we offer to our users. We've organized the entire internet for them, social networks, video, photos, personal pages, the works. YouGetIt.com is everyone's local social network, and we think that the opportunity for users, businesses and advertisers to interact and communicate on YouGetIt.com just blows away any of the competition."
