AEP Networks' SSL VPN Extends Secure Mobile Enterprise Access to Apple iPhone

AEP Networks, the leader in policy-based networking, announces compatibility between its AEP Netilla Security Platform (NSP) Secure Sockets Layer Virtual Private Network (SSL VPN) and the Apple iPhone. Customers can use the NSP (via the iPhone's embedded Safari web browser) to enable secure, policy driven, granular application access to enterprise applications -- Microsoft Exchange/Outlook Web Access (OWA) mail being among the most important.
Since the recent product launch of the iPhone, many analysts and publications have commented on its apparent lack of security and issues associated with business-class application access. Corporate users require secure access to their enterprise networks/applications. The NSP readily addresses this need with its web reverse proxy feature for standard web browser environments.
Web applications similar to OWA such as portals, ERP, CRM, scheduling and other corporate-based web applications can be accessed from the iPhone in the same fashion via the NSP without exposing these applications to dangerous, direct connections from the Internet (e.g., without putting them into a firewall DMZ).
"Although Apple is marketing the iPhone more toward consumers, the devices will, no doubt, begin to appear on corporate networks," said Reginald Best, COO of AEP Networks. "With AEP's SSL VPN, IT departments can deploy secure enterprise access to their mobile users, including those with iPhones. Users will be able to use OWA via the Safari browser as though they were on the local network."
The NSP SSL VPN is a mature, scalable and highly available solution for use in the enterprise. It enables secure, web-browser access to a broad range of business applications. With any PC or laptop, mobile users quickly and securely reach virtually all of their business resources. NSP features include: support for the broadest range of enterprise applications; comprehensive client integrity; advanced V-Realms authentication engine; device identification (ability to authenticate remote clients/PCs); disaster recovery/business continuity and geographical load balancing capabilities; and certifications such as FIPS 140-1, Level 3; ICSA Labs; and VPN Consortium.
NSP fits into generally accepted and deployed corporate authentication approaches. Authenticated user access (via RSA, Vasco, Aladdin, RADIUS, LDAP) is accomplished via the NSP login page.
IT Stays in Control
SSL encrypted communications supported by digital certificates are utilized for enterprise-level data privacy while in transit across the public Internet. All iPhone remote access traffic comes through a single access point to the corporation which can be monitored and is secured by the NSP. This approach eliminates unmanaged remote access back-doors (i.e., forwarding corporate emails to gmail, hotmail and internet meet-me services like gotomypc) which can cause security problems for the enterprise.
AEP Networks has tested the iPhone and NSP on both EDGE cellular data and WiFi connections to confirm the compatibility.
