Live Earth Streams to MSN Record Book

Posted on: Monday, 9 July 2007, 18:18 CDT

The around-the-world Live Earth concert to raise awareness of global warming drew more than 10 million live online streams, U.S. based MSN reported.

Microsoft's MSN portal officials said the weekend Webcast achieved a milestone in live Internet broadcasting for an entertainment endeavor, Billboard said Monday.

The multi-continent concerts, organized by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and producer Kevin Wall, surpassed AOL's coverage of the Live 8 concerts in July 2005, which reported 5 million unique users, rather than streams.

We expect to see an even greater number of streams after the concerts are over as people return to watch their favorite performances or enjoy them for the first time if they missed the concerts live, said Joanne Bradford, corporate vice president and chief media officer of MSN.

Despite the event's overall online success, TV viewers in Britain apparently weren't hot for the global warming concert.

The BBC1's live television coverage attracted an audience of less than a third of the number who watched Concert for Diana on the same channel, Billboard reported. Live Earth grabbed a 25 percent share at its peak, compared to the Concert for Diana, which drew a 60 percent audience share at its peak.
