Fulcrum Microsystems Chooses Portable Ixia Test Solution to Prove Performance of Its PivotPoint Switch Device

Fulcrum Microsystems announced today that it has chosen portable test solutions from Ixia (Nasdaq:XXIA), a leading, global provider of IP network testing solutions, to demonstrate the performance of its PivotPoint family of board interconnect switch chips, both in the lab and at the customer site.
PivotPoint is a family of SPI-4.2 switch chips that provide any-to-any connectivity between packet processing devices on the boards of multi-gigabit networking and storage systems. These devices transform fixed data paths into dynamic, switched flows that allow data to freely access all of the processing resources on the board as needed.
To test its chip under extreme bandwidth conditions, Fulcrum developed a reference board design with a high concentration of 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports that all feed into the PivotPoint switch. They connected this board to the IXIA 250 field-portable chassis with 1 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to provide wire-speed traffic to flood PivotPoint with data.
Once Fulcrum engineers confirmed that PivotPoint was delivering the maximum throughput, they were able to take the identical configuration (the reference board stimulated by the IXIA 250) to client sites to deliver a dynamic and interactive demonstration of the flexibility and performance that the device could add to the customer's system.
"It's important for an emerging company with an innovative technology to prove to customers that it works in a way that makes a lasting impression," said Mike Zeile, vice president of marketing for Fulcrum Microsystems. "The portability and performance of the Ixia solution helped us to translate what would have been static presentations into dynamic and memorable sessions that really prove our value proposition."
"The pressure is on chip makers to improve their time to market, and, as is the case with Fulcrum Microsystems, that time to market clock doesn't stop until the customer designs the chip into its system," said David Anderson, Ixia's vice president of worldwide sales and business development operations. "Utilizing the performance and flexibility of Ixia devices to provide real world test conditions can help device makers get their product tested and perfected, and we are glad that we could play a role in Fulcrum's success."
The IXIA 250 is a portable two-slot test chassis that features an integrated LCD touch screen display, keyboard, and mouse, and is powerful enough to run every Ixia application and Load Module, from 10/100 through 10 Gigabit Ethernet, to OC-3c through OC-192c Packet Over SONET, and OC-3c to OC-12c ATM.
