  • A kind of pear that has a rough astringent taste.
  • Anything that stops the mouth; an unanswerable argument; an aspersion or a sarcasm by which a person is put to silence.
'Choke-pear' referring to the fruit was coined around 1530, says the OED. The figurative sense originated around 1573.
