Seamounts on the Ocean Floor

May 1, 2010

Seamounts are submerged volcanic peaks that rise abruptly from the seafloor. Scientists have identified more than 45,000 seamounts worldwide using satellite altimetry techniques. Collectively, seamounts represent one of the largest marine habitats on Earth. This fly-though takes you through the seamounts of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) in the Central Pacific.
