Asturian Valley Cattle

The Asturian Valley is a breed of cattle native to the valleys of Asturias, Spain and raised in the northern coastal region of the Bay of Biscay and the river valleys of the Cordillera Cantabrica mountain range.

During the 1800s, the Asturian Valley were the most abundant cattle breed of northern Spain. However, in the early 1900s, foreign breeds began to overrun the area and by the mid 1900s, only 22,000 Asturian Valley cattle were left. Beginning in the 1980s, the Spanish government along with the Association of Breeders began protection motions for the breed and now the Asturin Valley is wide spread in the northern region and being introduced to other areas of Spain.

The average weight of the Asturian Valley is between 1,300 and 1,500 pounds. Its coat can vary in different shades of brown and sometimes has a white head and underside.

It is used for its high quality meat and milk that is rich in fat and protein.
