Banded Groundling, Brachythemis leucosticte

The banded groundling (Brachythemis leucosticte) is a species of dragonfly that can be found in Africa, the Middle East, and southern areas of Europe. Its range includes Spain, Algeria, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Zambia, among many other areas. It prefers to reside near rivers, freshwater lakes, swamps, and marshes, where it can be seen flying in swarms along the shoreline. Although its population numbers are unknown, it is thought to be abundant locally and it does not have any major threats. Because of this, the banded groundling appears on the IUCN Red List with a conservation status of “Least Concern.â€
