Black-tailed Skimmer, Orthetrum cancellatum
The black-tailed skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum) is a species of dragonfly that can be found in Europe and Asia. Its range includes Albania, Austria, Belgium, China, Cyprus, France, German, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom, among many other areas. It can be found near mostly sunny, slow moving and still water sources. The black-tailed skimmer varies in color depending upon the sex. Adult males hold a blue abdomen, while adult females hold a brownish abdomen. Young males and females are yellowish in color.
The black-tailed skimmer is abundant throughout its range and is one of the most commonly seen dragonflies in Europe. It holds a stable population and has no known major threats. Because of this, it does need any conservation and appears on the IUCN Red List with a conservation status of “Least Concern.”
