The Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophorus), also known as the Swamp Quail, is an Australian species of true quail. It is found in much of
New Guinea and the Lesser Sunda Islands as well as in northern, eastern, south-eastern and south-western Australia and Tasmania, though absent from arid regions. Species found in New Zealand and Fiji have been introduced there and are not native.
Its habitats are agricultural areas, wet grasslands, shrublands and freshwater wetlands. It is widespread and common throughout its range. It is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
