The Kunming Dog is a wolf-dog hybrid which was bred in the 1950s as a military dog in Kunming, Yunnan. The breed was developed from a pool of wolfdogs, civil dogs and shepherd dogs. The bred was officially recognized in China in 1988 and is now widely used by the Chinese police and military. The Kunming Dog has also been known as a good watchdog and guard dog.
The breed appears similar to the German Shepherd, but it is taller and has a shorter coat. The Kunming Dog stands 25 to 27 inches and weighs 66 to 84 pounds. The coat of the breed is predominantly a shade of brown, ranging from rust to straw, and its muzzle and back are marked with black. Its tail is carried high and curls over its back.
