Painter’s Mussel, Unio pictorum
The Painter’s Mussel, Unio Pictorum, is a species of medium-sized freshwater mussel, an aquatic bivalve mollusk belonging to the family Unionidae, the river mussels.
This species resides in Europe. It’s called the “painter’s mussel” because the shell was historically utilized as a conveniently sized and shaped receptacle for holding artist’s paint.
Its native distribution is Europe. The distribution range is Croatia, Germany, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Sweden, British Isles, and Slovakia.
