The Pekingese is an ancient Chinese breed which was a favorite pet of the Chinese Imperial court. The breed is incredibly similar to the Japanese Chin, and they most likely have the same ancestry. For centuries, the breed could only be owned by royalty. The breed is over 2000 years old and has not changed much since its creation.

The breed weighs 7 to 14 pounds and stands 6 to 9 inches tall. The head of the breed is large compared to the body, and rectangular in shape. The face of the breed is flat and in line. It has heart-shaped, flat lying, feathered ears and wide-set eyes. The nose is short and broad with a wrinkle which separates the upper and lower parts of its face. Its neck is short and thick, and its body muscular and pear-shaped. The tail of the Pekingese is high set and arched and teeming with fringe. The breed is thick and heavy; it is surprisingly dense for its size. Its chest is broad and full, and its front legs are bowed. The coat of the Pekingese is generally gold but can also be red, sable, light gold, cream, black, white, blue, gray, or black and tan. It is long, coarse, and straight with a thick, soft undercoat. The breed’s coat forms a mane on the neck and shoulder area.

The breed is very active and athletic. It is very intelligent and regal and somewhat proud. In order to train the breed, it needs to be convinced that training is beneficial. The Pekingese has been said to be a one man breed; it enjoys being around its owner but does not tolerate children and their behavior very well. It expects respect. The breed also tends to be jealous and stubborn and may not respond well to other pets unless thoroughly socialized.

The breed is somewhat high maintenance, as it needs to be brushed daily and groomed at least 4 times a year. Dirt needs to be removed from the eye pores and creases on the face daily to prevent irritation and hotspots.

The breed is generally healthy but it may suffer from heart problems, allergies, eye problems, back problems, and breathing issues.
