The PlayStation is a game console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) first sold on December 3, 1994 in Japan. It has sold over 100 million units worldwide since its release. Ken Kutaragi known as “The Father of the PlayStation” is the creator of the PlayStation game console and a Sony executive.

In 1988, Sony and Nintendo formed a partnership to develop a CD-ROM for the Super Nintendo, but a day after the PlayStation’s official announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in June of 1991, Nintendo announced it was ending its partnership with Sony and taking the technology with them, but negotiations were still active. The negotiations finally ended in 1992 and Kutaragi was transferred to Sony Music. In 1993 SCEI was formed and development of the PlayStation began.

In 1994, two game publishers, Electronic Arts, and Namco became partners with Sony to develop games for the PlayStation. The difference between the PlayStation and its competitors at the time was that the PlayStation used a 3D-capable CD-ROM instead of cartridges and the system was less expensive.

A slimmed-down version of the PlayStation was released on July 7, 2000, called the PS One. The PS One came with an optional LCD screen and an upgraded Graphical User Interface. The PS One outsold all other PlayStation and PS2 consoles in the year following its release.

The unit has a 33.8 Mhz CPU, uses 16.7 million colors, and has an audio playback feature. It does not support online access. There is 2,418 games in the PlayStation game library. Click here for a list of games. Most of the games made for the PlayStation can be played on the PS2, PSX, and PS3.

The best-selling game for the original PlayStation is Gran Turismo, 10.85 million copies. The unit uses CD-ROM media with included accessories of a RFU adaptor and controller. Available accessories include a wide variety of controllers, memory cards, and cables.

The PlayStation Underground was a magazine published between Spring 1997 and Spring 2001. The mag also offered subscribers a monthly CD containing interviews, cheats, game demos, and one-of-a-kind memory saves.

As of 2012, the PlayStation brand is the most followed brand on Facebook with more 30 million fans and followers.
