Red Starfish, Callopatiria granifera

The red starfish (Callopatiria granifera) is a species of starfish that is classified within the Asterinidae family. It can be found along the South African Coast in a range that extends from Durban to Namibia, at depths of up to 269 feet. This species reaches an average diameter of 5.9 inches, with a medium sized disk and thick arms. The texture on its upper body resembles a tiled roof. Like some other species of starfish, the red starfish consumes detritus.
