Scarlet Dragonfly, Crocothemis erythraea

The scarlet dragonfly (Crocothemis erythraea), known by other names including the scarlet darter, is a species of dragonfly that can be found in most areas of Africa, southern areas of Europe, and across Asia. Adult males are bright red in color and have a thicker abdomen that many other dragonfly species, with small amber markings occurring along the base of the hind wings. Females and young individuals are yellowish-brown in color, with some individuals holding a pale stripe along the thorax. This species is rare in Britain, with vagrant individuals appearing since 1995 in that area. Despite this, it is not a threatened species and occurs on the IUCN Red List with a conservation status of “Least Concern.â€
