The Spotted Harrier (Circus assimilis), also known as the Smoke Hawk, is a large bird of prey that is found in Sulawesi, the Lesser Sunda Islands and is sparsely distributed throughout mainland Australia. It inhabits open country, especially in arid and semiarid regions.
The Spotted Harrier has gray upperparts, chestnut facial disc and a dark rump. The wingspan is 14.75 to 18.5 inches long. Females are larger than males. Its diet consists of ground birds, rabbits, rodents and lizards. It nests in trees, building a platform nest of twigs lined with leaves. The clutch is 2 to 4 eggs. Incubation lasts about 33 days, and chicks fledge 37 days after hatching.
