News - Alfred Dunhill Championship
The third round of the European Tour's Alfred Dunhill Championship at Fife, Scotland, was suspended Saturday when high winds made the three courses unplayable. A tour official said the third round will be played Sunday, and the fourth on Monday. The forecast that we have from every source is for the winds to strengthen during the day, said European Tour Tournament Director David Garland.
South African Richard Sterne, ranked 113th in the world two weeks ago, used back-to-back golf tournament wins to secure a spot in the 2009 Masters. Sterne was one of 15 players to earn a Masters berth by finishing among the top 50 in the world rankings. Sterne was ranked 113th in the ratings of Dec.
Richard Sterne beat Northern Ireland's Gareth Maybin in a one-hole playoff Sunday to capture the South African Open. Sterne, who also won last week's Alfred Dunhill championship, reached the playoff by shooting a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 after beginning the round locked in a tie for 11th place. He finished his dramatic comeback by making birdies at the 17th and 18th. Both players finished regulation with totals of 14-under 274. Maybin (70) was tied for second when the round began, but ultimately, bogeys at the fourth and eighth proved costly. This tournament is so prestigious and the names on the trophy are just unbelievable, Sterne said after becoming the third straight South Africa native to win the event at Paarl's Pearl Valley estates.
A 3-under-par 69 Sunday was enough for Richard Sterne to win the European Tour's Alfred Dunhill Championship in his native South Africa. His overall total at the Leopard Creek golf club in Mpumalanga, South Africa, 17-under 271, gave him his fourth career European Tour tournament title. Sterne was aided by birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th holes, and the inability of runners-up Johan Edfors (66) of Sweden and Robert Rock (70) of England to forge consistent late challenges. Edfors, after making double-bogey at the seventh, made five birdies on his last 11 holes, but could not overcome his early problems. Rock bogeyed the 14th and parred the closing four holes. Edfors (66) and Rock (70) finished 16-under 270. It was a good finish really, Sterne said.
Thomas Aiken shot a course-record 11-under-par 61 Saturday for the third-round lead of the Alfred Dunhill Championship by one stroke over Len Mattiace. Aiken, playing in front of a home crowd at the Leopard Creek golf club in Mpumalanga, South Africa, made eight birdies in a 10-hole stretch from the par-five second. He maintained enough momentum through the end of his round and will go for his first European Tour crown Sunday. At 18-under 198, Aiken matched the tournament's 54-hole scoring record. You know, it's this funny old game called golf, the 25-year-old Aiken said.
