Loana Raluca Olaru of Romania upset top-seeded Alize Cornet of France Saturday in the semifinals of the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament. Olaru, 20 and ranked 66th in the world, rallied from a set down to post a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory to reach a WTA Tour final for the first time in her young career. She will meet another first-time WTA finalist, 21-year-old German Andrea Petkovic, in Sunday's final.
No. 1-seed Alize Cornet rallied for a three-set win Thursday, a day when two other high seeds lost at the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria. Cornet had her serve broken three times in the opening set before she came back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over local favorite Patricia Mayr.
Top seed Alize Cornet of France beat Mariana Duque Marino of Colombia 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 Tuesday in opening play at the Gastein Ladies tennis event in Austria. Cornet advanced to play Patricia Mayr of Austria, who defeated Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-3, 6-3 in opening-round play.
Defending champion Alize Cornet was upset in straight sets Wednesday in second-round action of the $220,000 GDF Suez Grand Prix tournament in Hungary. Cornet, seeded second in the event where a year ago she recorded her only career tournament victory, was routed 6-2, 6-0 by Shahar Peer.
