Al Montoya recorded a shutout in his first NHL start Wednesday, making 23 saves in bringing Phoenix a 3-0 victory over Colorado. In a meeting of the two worst teams in the Western Conference, the Coyotes handed the Avalanche their eighth straight loss. Phoenix recalled Montoya from the American Hockey League last week and he came through with a solid performance against a team that has struggled to score goals this season. Mikkel Boedker put Phoenix in front 6:28 into the game and it remained a 1-0 contest until Shane Doan put a slap shot past Andrew Raycroft 7:17 into the third.

Corey Perry scored twice Wednesday and Anaheim produced the game's first six goals in crushing Colorado 7-2. The Ducks took advantage of poor goaltending to win their fifth straight and their sixth out of seven. Anaheim moved into seventh place in the tightly bunched Western Conference with 80 points.
