A man taking part in a London art project promising anyone the opportunity to become a living statue shed his underpants and was asked by police to cover up. The man, who identified himself only as Simon, took part in Antony Gormley's fourth plinth art project early Wednesday by climbing atop the statue-less plinth in London's Trafalgar Square to spend the allotted time -- up to an hour, the project's rules state -- as a human statue, The Times of London reported Thursday. Simon received hoots from the crowd when he climbed atop the plinth at 1 a.m.

Britons who climbed onto an empty plinth in London's Trafalgar Square to become living statues say the experience is both exhilarating and terrifying. A 100-day art project created by Antony Gormley called One & Other began Monday, in which people sign up to be picked at random to spend an hour perched atop the vacant, 25-foot-high statuary plinth in Trafalgar Square, The Daily Mail reported. Part of you is very excited and part of you is filled with abject terror, said London computer consultant Jill Gatcum, 51, the third living statue.

Participants in an upcoming public art exhibit in London say they are ready to pose as living statues in Trafalgar Square. Participant Tom de Freston told The Sunday Telegraph he will portray the late Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio in artist Antony Gormley's living statue exhibit at the London square. Caravaggio seems a bit over the top for these days so I wanted to send it up a bit, de Freston said of his part in the exhibit, which begins Monday. I am going as a giant pigeon, communications student Heather Knight said.
