By Roy Kammerer, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BERLIN - Haile Gebrselassie said five years ago he was going to break the marathon world record. After six failed attempts, and as people thought age might be catching up to him, the 34-year-old Ethiopian delivered Sunday at the Berlin Marathon.
Haile Gebrselassie broke the world record Sunday in winning the Berlin Marathon in two hours, four minutes and 26 seconds. The 34-year-old Ethiopian lowered the mark of 2:04:55.
NEW YORK - Kenya's Paul Tergat held off defending champion Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa in a final sprint Sunday to win the men's title in the New York City Marathon. Tergat edged ahead in the final few meters of the 26.2-mile race to win in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 31 seconds.
