Kansas' Bill Self was tapped by Sporting News as men's basketball coach of the year Wednesday. He won the award in what had been called a rebuilding season for the reigning NCAA Division I champions. The 11th-ranked Jayhawks (25-6, 14-2 Big 12) won the Big 12 Conference's regular-season title this year despite losing all five starters from last year's national championship team and fielding the youngest squad in Self's six years in Lawrence. It's been as much fun as I've ever had coaching, the last two months, Self said on the school's Web site.

Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich staked Kansas to a quick start Wednesday and the 18th-ranked Jayhawks held on to defeat Iowa State 72-55. Kansas reached the 21-win mark for the 20th consecutive season. Both Collins and Aldrich scored 22 points, igniting a first-half surge that gave the Jayhawks a 30-13 advantage.
