Mark Buehrle worked into the ninth Thursday and the Chicago White Sox extended their season-long winning streak to six games by downing Kansas City 4-1. Chicago won for the 13th time in 17 contests and moved within 2 ½ games of idle Detroit for first place in the American League Central. Buehrle (8-2), who had won just one of his previous seven starts, took the mound in the ninth in an attempt to finish off a shutout.
Bobby Jenks worked out of a ninth-inning jam Thursday to earn his third save and bring the Chicago White Sox a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay. Chicago out-hit the Rays 14-5, but had to sweat out the bottom of the ninth after the Rays put the potential tying and winning runs on base. Jermaine Dye went 3-for-5 and hit a two-run homer in the second inning.
Ryan Theriot might have a future as a manager, but for now he's solidifying his spot in the majors.
