Greg Needell announced Thursday he was stepping down after seven seasons as coach of the U.S. Alpine ski team. Needell said in a written statement that he wanted to spend more time at home, particularly as his 11-year-old son, Coen, becomes more active in ski racing and Little League.
Lindsey Vonn's super-G win in Italy Sunday was the 19th World Cup victory of her career and made her the winningest female ski racer in U.S. history. Vonn, 24, a St. Paul, Minn., native who now skis out of Vail, Colo., surpassed Tamara McKinney, who reached 18 World Cup wins in the 1980s.
Austria's Manfred Pranger won both runs Sunday to capture the men's slalom event in the finale of the world Alpine skiing championships in France. Pranger covered the course in a combined time of 1 minute, 44.17 and edged second-place finisher Julien Lizereoux of France by 0.31 seconds. Michael Janyk of Canada placed third.
Canadian John Kucera edged Didier Cuche of Swizterland by 0.04 seconds Saturday to win the men's downhill at the World Championships in France. Kucera, 24, made a nearly flawless 2:07.01 run down the icy course at Val d'Isere to become the first Canadian to ever win a world title in the men's downhill.
