Barnes & Noble announced today that it would sell lower-priced Nook Tablet device with 8GB of memory for $199, the same price and memory size as the Kindle Fire. In addition, the price of the Nook Color is being dropped to $169 from $199.

Barnes & Noble Inc. slashed its Nook sales forecast on Thursday, and surprised investors by saying it was considering spinning off its digital business in an attempt to regain profitability amid the growing popularity of digital books and magazines.

Barnes & Noble Inc. said on Tuesday that it had narrowed its net loss during its fiscal first quarter, which ended July 30, as sales of its Nook e-book reader and e-books helped offset lower physical book sales.
