News - Brad Penny
Brad Penny threw a complete game Wednesday and Eli Whiteside drove in three runs to carry the San Francisco Giants to a 4-1 decision over Arizona. Despite the win, the Giants were eliminated from playoff contention when the Colorado Rockies defeated Milwaukee earlier in the evening.
Jon Garland limited San Francisco to an unearned run and seven hits in eight innings Saturday, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers' 12-1 rout of the Giants. Garland (11-11) used 95 pitches to produce his third quality start since being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks this month. Jeff Weaver hurled a scoreless ninth. LA's homer-happy offense was started by Ronnie Belliard's two-out, first-inning grand slam.
Brad Penny held the Dodgers to two runs and five hits in seven innings Sunday, helping San Francisco to a 7-2 win over Los Angeles. Brad Penny allowed five hits in his San Francisco debut Wednesday to help bring the Giants a 4-0 decision over Philadelphia. Penny (1-0) was released by Boston last week after putting together a 7-8 record and a 5.61 ERA in 24 starts this season. San Francisco, chasing a playoff berth, quickly signed Penny and he came through in his first outing by blanking the Phillies in a 102-pitch effort. Jeremy Affeldt completed the shutout by throwing a perfect ninth in a non-save situation. The Giants began the night's action trailing Colorado by a game in the National League wild-card race. Juan Uribe hit a two-run homer and Aaron Rowand had a solo blast, both coming in the sixth inning, pushing the Giants to their sixth win in eight games. Andres Torres drove in the first San Francisco run with a single in the fifth. Philadelphia had only one runner reach third base.
The Boston Red Sox released right hander Brad Penny at his request, the team said. The Boston Herald reported the move allowed Boston room on its roster for newly acquired reliever Billy Wagner. Also, knuckle baller Tim Wakefield has returned from a lower back strain and a subsequent nerve issue that caused a left calf injury. Penny (7-8) had just one win in his last 11 starts. Boston signed the free agent to a one-year, $5 million contract despite three stints on the disabled list last season while with the Los Angeles Dodgers because of shoulder problems. I enjoyed playing with all of the guys, Penny told the newspaper late Wednesday.
