Brad Hawpe's three-run homer Tuesday keyed a 14-hit attack for the Colorado Rockies who outlasted San Diego 11-10. Clint Barmes had a two-run inside-the-park homer to help Colorado move five games ahead of San Francisco in the National League wild-card race.
Jason Giambi, in his first Colorado appearance, singled in the go-ahead runs in the eighth Wednesday to give the Rockies a 5-2 win over the New York Mets. Colorado signed Giambi to a minor league contract after he was released by Oakland and the Rockies called him up this week. With the score tied at 2-2 and the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, Giambi was called on to hit for Clint Barmes.
Barry Zito scattered eight hits and gave up only one run in 8 1/3 innings Saturday in San Francisco's 5-3 victory over Colorado. Zito (9-11) struck out seven and walked one as the Giants moved within a game of the Rockies in the wild-card chase.
Brad Hawpe homered and drove in two runs Tuesday to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals. Carlos Gonzalez and Clint Barmes also homered for the Rockies, who have won four of their last six games.
Ubaldo Jimenez allowed three hits and struck out six over eight innings Wednesday, helping the Colorado Rockies to an 8-0 blanking of Pittsburgh. Jimenez (10-9) threw 119 pitches, trimmed his ERA to 3.47 and helped the Rockies stay a game in front of San Francisco in the race for the National League
