The NHL's Dallas Stars fired Coach Dave Tippett Wednesday after failing to make the post-season for the first time since 2002, ESPN reported. The move follows the May 31 hiring of Joe Nieuwendyk to become general manager, replacing the two-man GM tandem of Brett Hull and Les Jackson. Tippett spent six years behind the Stars bench after being hired in May 2002.
The Dallas Stars made long-time NHL forward Joe Nieuwendyk their general manager Sunday and canned co-General Managers Brett Hull and Les Jackson. The move was made after the Stars went 36-35-11 this season and failed to qualify for the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2002. We are very excited to secure Joe Nieuwendyk as the general manager, team owner Tom Hicks said.
The Dallas Stars announced Sunday that controversial forward Sean Avery will never again play for the NHL franchise. Avery, 28, was suspended by the league for six games without pay this month for crude comments he made to reporters regarding his former girlfriends dating other hockey players. He was eligible to return to the club Sunday after the six-game ban expired, but the club and Avery's representatives determined it was not possible for him to rejoin his teammates. Sean needs to focus on his own well-being while the Stars hockey team must focus on playing hockey and competing for a playoff spot, Co-General Manager Brett Hull said on the team's Web site.
