The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday released veteran quarterback Brian Griese, who started strong last season before being hurt. Griese, 34, won his first three starts and then suffered a shoulder injury in the fifth week of the season.
Jason Elam kicked a 34-yard field goal with 4:04 left in overtime Sunday and Atlanta overcame three turnovers and a blocked punt to down Tampa Bay 13-10. Atlanta and Tampa Bay emerged with 9-5 records, equaling the best in the NFC among those battling for a wild-card playoff berth. Brian Griese, who got the start at quarterback for Tampa Bay because of an injured calf suffered by Jeff Garcia, threw for 269 yards and a touchdown. Griese, however, was unable to lead the Bucs to a touchdown after they blocked an Atlanta punt at the Falcons' 22 with 2:29 to play in the fourth quarter.
Only days removed from burying a teammate, and without the benefit of a full practice, the Washington Redskins managed to win thanks to a backup quarterback who last completed a pass in 2004.
ST. LOUIS _ The difference between Rex Grossman being a starting quarterback and a lawn ornament looked to be about a step. The pass he threw to Bernard Berrian in the second quarter Monday night was nothing extraordinary.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent quarterback Jeff Garcia and potentially nabbed even more competition for incumbent starter Chris Simms by obtaining the rights to Jake Plummer from Denver on Saturday.
