Veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich was demoted Monday, clearing the way for Josh Johnson to start for Tampa Bay at Washington next week. Leftwich started all of the Buccaneers' games this season, all of which ended in losses.
Tony Romo passed for 353 yards and three touchdowns Sunday, leading Dallas past the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34-21. Rex Grossman threw two touchdown passes in the first half Friday and Houston held on for a 27-20 exhibition victory over Tampa Bay. Grossman completed 9-of-17 passes for 197 yards while filling in for starter Matt Schaub. Schaub sat out the game with a sprained ankle, but is expected to be ready for Houston's regular-season opener against the New York Jets. Grossman threw second-quarter scoring passes of 87 yards to Jacoby Jones and 11 yards to rookie James Casey, giving the Texans a 14-3 lead.
Chad Pennington's 2-yard throw to Anthony Fasano produced the game's only touchdown Thursday, and Miami held on to defeat Tampa Bay 10-6. Both offenses struggled in an exhibition game delayed in the second quarter by lightning.
Luke McCown connected on 6-of-9 passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns Saturday in Tampa Bay's 24-23 exhibition victory over Jacksonville. Both of McCown's TD passes came in the second quarter when he hit Jeremy Stevens from 17 yards and Sammie Stroughter from 9.
