Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena will miss the rest of the 2009 season after breaking two fingers Monday in a 4-1 loss to the Yankees. Pena tried to check his swing on a pitch while batting in the first inning but the ball hit his bat and left hand simultaneously.

Carlos Pena had three hits, with a homer, and four RBI Monday to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to an 11-7 win over Detroit. Jason Bartlett and Evan Longoria had three hits, Bartlett had a home run and Longoria scored three runs and had an RBI for the Rays, who scored six times in the first inning. James Shields (9-10), who won his second straight start, gave up five runs on 10 hits in seven innings. Carlos Guillen had two home runs and two singles for Detroit, which saw its AL Central Division lead over second-place Minnesota cut to four games.

Carlos Pena hit a pair of two-run homers Tuesday and the Tampa Bay Rays added to their success against Toronto this season by downing the Blue Jays 7-3. Pena's homers came in the second and third innings, helping the Rays built a quick 6-1 lead. Tampa Bay defeated Toronto for the 11th time in 14 meetings this year and stayed within three games of Boston for the lead in the American League wild-card race. James Shields (8-10) allowed eight hits but only three runs in 6 1/3 innings to get the win.
