Max Scherzer equaled his longest outing of the season Wednesday and Brandon Allen hit a two-run homer in lifting Arizona past the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1. Scherzer (9-8) took a shutout into the eighth and was lifted with two out in the inning when Manny Ramirez singled in Juan Pierre from second. Esmerling Vasquez relieved Scherzer and, with runners on first and second, got Matt Kemp to line out to left to end the inning.

Ryan Dempster held the Los Angeles Dodgers to a run and three hits in seven innings Sunday, helping the Chicago Cubs avert a four-game sweep with a 3-1 victory. Dempster (7-7) threw 101 pitches with a walk and five strikeouts. Closer Carlos Marmol earned his fifth save with a scoreless ninth. Jake Fox had four hits -- one a solo homer -- and two RBI.
