Cleveland Indians relief pitcher Winston Abreu and Manager Eric Wedge are being punished with suspensions for a weekend beaning incident in Seattle. Abreu was suspended for three games for intentionally hitting Jack Hannahan in the ninth inning Saturday when the Indians were leading the Mariners 10-0.
Jeremy Sowers pitched seven scoreless innings and Jhonny Peralta had three RBI Saturday to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 10-3 victory over Seattle. Chris Gimenez, Ryan Garko and Asdrubal Cabrera each hit a two-run homer for Cleveland, which has won three games in a row for the first time since May 25-28. Sowers (3-7), recalled from Triple-A prior to the game, allowed just four hits and two walks. Franklin Gutierrez was 2-for-3 with a walk for the Mariners, who have lost three of five. Erik Bedard (5-3), who lasted only three innings, is winless in four starts since coming off the disabled list. Chris Jakubauskas relieved Bedard in the fourth and gave up a two-run homer to Gimenez.
Rob Johnson drove in two runs in the 11th inning with his third double of the game Friday, bringing the Seattle Mariners a 7-6 decision over Boston. Seattle overcame an early two-run deficit and took a two-run lead into the bottom of the eighth before Nick Green forged a 5-5 tie with a two-run double. The Mariners scored the decisive runs off Ramon Ramirez (5-3), who gave up a leadoff single to Franklin Gutierrez in the 11th and walked Ryan Langerhans. Chris Woodward moved the runners up with a sacrifice and Johnson doubled them both home.
Adam Kennedy had four hits and two RBI Monday, boosting the Oakland Athletics to a 6-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Travis Buck added a solo homer and scored three runs, and Jack Hannahan added an RBI for Oakland. Brett Anderson (2-4) gave up a run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings.
