Colorado had two-run homers from Clint Barmes and Brad Hawpe to beat Florida 7-3 in the nightcap and split their Sunday doubleheader. The Marlins won the opener 10-3 on Chris Coghlan's three-run homer. Jorge De La Rosa (11-8) went 5 2/3 innings in the second game to get the win, allowing one unearned run on seven hits and striking out nine. Rick VandenHurk (2-2) took the loss.
Chris Coghlan and Hanley Ramirez homered for the Marlins Sunday in Florida's 10-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the first game of a doubleheader. Coghlan went 3-for-5 and had a three run homer that keyed a five-run second inning for the Marlins, who banged out 17 hits and scored six or more runs for the eighth consecutive game. The win also pulled Florida to within a game of Colorado in the National League wild-card race. Carlos Gonzalez went 2-for-4 for Colorado, but starting pitcher Aaron Cook (10-5) was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits and three walks in 2/23 innings and was hung with the loss. Chris Volstad (9-9) got the win allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts in five-plus innings.
Wes Helms produced the only extra base hit in a six-run sixth inning Thursday and the Florida Marlins used that outburst to run past Houston 9-2. One night after having a five-game winning streak snapped, the Marlins moved a half game in front of idle Atlanta for second place in the National League East, 4 ½ games behind division-leading Philadelphia. Sean West (4-4) allowed a run on five hits over six innings to get the win and his victory was all but wrapped up when the Marlins sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth. Helms doubled in the first run of the inning and Ross Gload then delivered a bases-loaded, RBI single. Chris Coghlan and Emilio Bonifacio had an RBI each in the frame and Hanley Ramirez finished things off with a two-run base hit. Mike Hampton (7-10) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings.
