A study published on bmj.com today adds to the evidence that certain non-oral hormonal contraceptives (e.g. skin patches, implants and vaginal rings) carry a higher risk of serious blood clots (known as venous thromboembolism) than others.

The Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday that they are leaning towards adding new information about the risk of blood clots to labels of birth control pills.

Birth control is made as a one dose fits all. According to recent statistics, 66 percent of U.S adults are overweight or obese. Women are included in the 66 percent, and aside from being at a higher risk for chronic medical conditions, certain contraceptives may have certain set backs.
