By JEFF HAMPTON By Jeff Hampton The Virginian-Pilot An exclusive rehabilitation center proposed for Corolla has local residents protesting a facility they believe could attract drug and sex addicts to the Outer Banks resort town.
Corolla is home to Currituck Heritage Park, a soundfront spread that includes the Whalehead Club, Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education. It's a day-trip waiting to happen, with lots of family-type opportunities.
n British Cemetery. The cemetery is home to the graves of four British crewmen, two known and two unknown, from the HMS Bedfordshire. The converted 162-foot trawler was torpedoed off the Carolina coast by U-558, a German submarine, in May 1942, during World War II. N.C. 12 in Ocracoke. Free.
